Doormat Syndrome

Doormat Syndrome

A doormat is an object; a rug that we use on the front door of our homes to keep dirty shoes from traipsing mud onto our floors. We don’t think about the doormat, we just walk on it, leaving our dirt all over it.

Many of us who are successful in our careers (or one key area of our lives), but lack self-love, become doormats in our relationships. We allow our partners to dictate our happiness and look to them for validation and our sense of self-worth. We don’t feel loved or worthy if our partner (or someone else) doesn’t tell us we are.

If you constantly seek validation and reassurance from others, you miss the opportunity to develop these internal functions.
